EMPD nabs man for drunk driving

While talking to the man, the officers detected a strong odour of alcohol.

Duduza – EMPD Task Team officers arrested a 39-year-old man for driving under the influence of alcohol on Saturday.

While performing law enforcement duties on Letsapa Street in the Zamani section, the officers stopped the driver of a grey Peugeot.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa revealed that the officers asked the driver to produce his driver’s licence, which he did.

However, while talking to the man, officers detected a strong odour of alcohol and requested the driver to step out of the vehicle.

“Officers asked the driver how many drinks he consumed, and he admitted to having two beers. Officers informed the driver they would do a breath test, which came back positive, exceeding the legal limit,” Thepa said.

The man was immediately arrested and escorted to the Tsakane Police Station, where a registered nurse took a blood sample.

Thepa said officers then took the man back to the Duduza SAPS to be detained. The vehicle was kept at the same police station.

“He faces charges of drunk driving and is expected to soon appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court,” Thepa concluded.
