A star on the rise

The young boxer emphasised that he was confident from the get-go.

Tsakani – Sphiwe ‘Biggest’ Khoza won a silver medal in the SANABO Youth and Elite Men and Women Championship Durban 2024.

The event was held at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Westville Campus, from July 2 to 7.

“I fought well. I had dedication and a vision that I would get to the top,” said Biggest.

The young boxer emphasised that he was confident from the get-go.

“Biggest told me that his intention for this year was to compete in championships.

“In March he competed for the region and won. He was roped into team Ekurhuleni. He then represented Ekurhuleni in May, and he did well.

“That is how he qualified to represent Gauteng at this national competition,” explained coach Lwazi Xundu of Total Success Boxing Club.

Biggest won his first fight on points, in the 63.5 kgs U19 category, and had no serious challenges through the quarter-finals.

“In the final, he met Wanga Oyisa from the Eastern Cape. They have fought each other before and Biggest won.

“But this time the gold medal went to Oyisa, after a split decision from the judges,” said Xundu.

Biggest expected an easy win since he had beaten Oyisa before.

“Even though I won the gold, I still believe I can beat him on points.”

He is a champion in the eyes of his coach.

“I am very proud of him because he represented the club well. We did all the necessary preparations, and I know he will still win more championships. The sky is the limit,” added Xundu.
