Some careers start with learnerships

She discovered that she loves working with people and taking responsibility, and plans to further her studies as she grows her career.

Learnerships can provide young people with opportunities into the careers of their dreams. Tsakani resident Ntombikayise Skosana (25) matriculated in 2014 with big dreams for the future, but after seven years, she remained unemployed.

“I actively searched for job opportunities in the ‘SA Youth’ online portal and came across the learnership programme listed under the careers section. She found it very interesting since it mentioned ‘work from home’.

Skosana applied, and her fortunes changed when she bagged the learnership with TransUnion’s Global Capability Centre (GCC) Africa in November 2021.

“I expected to gain practical experience through working with experienced professionals, mentorship, and guidance on what could help me advance in the corporate world professionally and personally, and a qualification that would afford me further employment opportunities,” she explained.

Fast forward to June 2024, and she’s permanently employed as an administrator in the human resources department.

“This learnership has been a transformative journey, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity, which was amazingly rewarding and enriching as I acquired valuable skills in not just one qualification but also in business analysis and project management.

“I have encountered challenges like any other newbie in the corporate world, but the best moment was working for a global organisation from the comfort of my own home and all the exposure I got while only an intern,” she added.

Skosana said she would encourage other young people to explore learnership opportunities.

“Learnerships allow you to gain practical work experience together with a qualification, which makes you more employable and prepares you for the professional journey, so if the opportunity comes, seize it because it could be a game changer for your future,” she concluded.
