EMPD tackles drugs and domestic violence with educational sessions

EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) continues community outreach on drugs, substance abuse, and domestic violence in Springs and surrounding areas.

Over the weekend of June 15 and 16, EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) officers conducted educational sessions on drugs and substance abuse, alongside discussions on domestic violence.

These presentations took place at Jacobs Farm and Ekurhuleni informal settlement Ward 74, serving the Springs and Kwa-Thema communities.

With Youth Month progressing, EMPD officers are dedicated to fostering community engagement and effecting positive change across Ekurhuleni.

“We are still experiencing a high number of youths roaming the streets, losing their lives, and getting arrested due to drugs and substance abuse,” stated EMPD’s Media and PR Unit.

“It is evident that communities are still overwhelmed with the number of vulnerable youths, particularly in busy intersections around urban areas and townships.”

During these sessions, officers emphasised the detrimental effects of drugs on communities, citing increased crime rates and compromised safety within families. They also addressed the link between substance abuse and domestic violence and discussed men safeguarding women and children in society.

Looking ahead, EMPD plans to extend their outreach efforts, including visits to local play parks to educate young people further about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.

This ongoing initiative underscores EMPD’s commitment to enhancing community welfare and safety throughout Ekurhuleni.
