Upcoming actor bags award nomination

Kagiso Motlhabi believes aspiring actors building experience and skills are vital components of a successful career.

Kwa-Thema – Kagiso Motlhabi (29) is an actor, aspiring writer and director whose journey in the film industry started in 2022 in a series called Mahlanganisa. Motlhabi said his journey in the industry started oddly.

“I have never thought of being an actor; it never crossed my mind, not even at a young age. I was inspired by a friend, Thabang Modupe and his uncle, Kagiso Modupe who placed me in front of a camera and asked me to roleplay a policeman character.

“This was a test I passed with flying colours. We were amazed at my confidence and ability to act. They further gave me the role of a policeman in the series of Mahlanganisa, based in Kwa-Thema.

“I managed to pull off the act. I amazed myself and have never looked back since. I have since been scouting for roles on television,” he said.

Motlhabi said he has bagged roles on well-known TV shows as an extra. I have worked as an extra on House of Zwide, Generation: The Legacy, My Brother’s Keeper, Smoking Mirrors and on Netflix Soon the Night Comes.

“All these small roles have played an impactful role in my life. I have grown to realise that I have the potential to make something out of my life.

“I am forever evolving as a young man. I am still trying to figure out life as a man and an artist. The one thing that excites me right now is I am in the phase of learning.

“Every day feels like a new day, and I feel like I am learning something new. I am not a well-known actor. This means I must work very hard to get to the top.

“I want to bag big roles too, and that comes with challenges. It is amazing to rub shoulders with well-established individuals, most of which I grew up admiring for their creativity,” said Motlhabi.

He said he looks up to Modupe for his extraordinary work and selflessness.

“I get my inspiration from the great Modupe because he also started as an actor and now he is an international award-winning film and TV producer, director, actor, radio host and motivational speaker

“He started somewhere and made a name for himself. His selfless being gave me my breakthrough in the field; I am forever grateful,” added Motlhabi.

Motlhabi has been nominated in the Sekhukhune Recognition Awards in the upcoming actor category.

“This nomination has given me hope. It proves that my talent is recognised.

“I would appreciate support from community members of Kwatsaduza. I plead with the community at large to vote for my craft. By voting, you are making my dream a reality.
