Local does pacesetting at Comrades

Sibusiso Mthembu’s expertise landed him the role of pacemaker in the ultimate human race

Kwa-Thema – Sibusiso Mthembu from Sunday Crew Health and Fitness was selected as an official pacesetter for the Comrades Marathon 2024.

“This was his second time being selected officially to pace at Comrades. His role was to help more runners reach the finish line before the cut-off time and achieve their goals of finishing the marathon, particularly the first-time runners.

“He was pacing the sub-11:30 bus, which arrived at 11:26:10 in Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg. He achieved his targeted time and delivered the masses on time and as per the Comrades mandate,” explained Thabo Mosheledi, the crew’s communications officer.

Pacemakers are experienced runners tasked to complete the course in a given time. Twenty-five of the crew’s runners also participated, with 23 finishing the marathon and returning with medals.

“Tshipi Noto Funeral Home staff members and 12 Sunday Crew members set up a waterpoint stationed at the 73km mark to show support for those who participated,” Mosheledi added.
