Cyclist wants community to climb greater heights

Matumelo aims to inspire women and young people in Kwa-Thema to cycle.

Matumelo Tjabadi believes sports can spark change in young people’s lives. She hopes her cycling journey encourages the women and youth in her community.

In a time when it is easy to influence young people into unhealthy lifestyles, such as heavy drinking and drug use, Tjabadi believes sports offer opportunities for positive change in their lives

“Not every learner is academically inclined, but there are children with the potential to excel in sports,” she said.

As a cyclist, Tjabadi (40) recently participated in the 2024 Cannondale Maluti Double 190 in April. The event is a team time trial over 180km, with teams of six and 12 riders.

“It was a hard one and took us six hours to complete. It took dedication in terms of my training and discipline.

“I want to encourage the small children coming up. I realise some are not fortunate enough to have sponsorship, but sponsorship from local businesses can help groom these young children and scout talent in the community,” Tjabadi explained.

The seasoned cyclist wants to see the community use bikes as more than just a mode of transport. Her ultimate vision is to see young Kwatsaduza residents travel the world because of sports.
