Scouts enjoy educational camp

The scouts attended a camp in Benoni last week.

Kwa-Thema – Unified Scout Group enjoyed a fun-filled and educational trip to the Arrow Park Scout Centre in Benoni from March 21 to 24.

Activities included:
• An adult leader’s development seminar held on Thursday, from 08:00 to 16:00.

• Later on during the day, the rover scouts had their overnight crew meeting which was followed by a clean-up campaign on the lake on Friday morning. This is a task led by Kamogelo Mokoena, as part of his final requirement for the rover squire training.

• From the morning of Friday to Sunday, assistant troop Scouter Tshepo Dube ran a Scoutcraft badge camp for scouts between the ages of 11 and 16 and was assisted by Tumelo Moroaswi. The camp was part of the requirements for Dube’s Movement Bar.

• Gontse Malatji, an assistant pack Scouter also organised a Meerkat and Cub fun day on Saturday and the young ones had a lot of fun.

• The youth members were treated to a specialist presentation on Saturday afternoon, on backpacking, from retired military personnel Major Serati Enoch “China” Tshenye from Hammanskraal.

Unified Scout Group also received a donation of 10 camping tents:
• Eight used dome tents from the Phoenix Rover Crew.

• Two used cottage tents from 9th Benoni Scout Group.

All of the campers (troop) received their observation, fire and cooking Scoutcraft badges. Three of the Scouts (two patrol leaders and one assistant patrol leader) were awarded their first challenge award – the Aids Awareness badge at the camp’s closing ceremony.

“We would like to thank the parents and Scout leaders who took the time to be with the Scouts, Cubs and Meerkats over the weekend, and a big thank you to Phumzile Kubheka (the assistant den Scouter) who made sure to keep us well-fed throughout the entire camp,” said the Scout group leader, Tebogo Rakgabyane.

“We appeal to parents to encourage the children to join Scouting,” he said.

The group meets on Saturdays from 11:00 to 13:00 at I-MAC Scout Centre, corner of Wauchope and Lesia streets in Kwa-Thema.

They admit youth members from five to 30 years old:
• Meerkats: five and six years
• Cubs: seven to 10 years
• Scouts: 11 to 17 years
• Rover Scouts: 18 to 30 years

Adult leaders from the ages of 18 and above are also welcome to join as adult scout leaders.
