Nkabinde Primary School continues to excel

The school’s sports department also won two awards from the GDE in 2023.

Kwa-Thema – Nkabinde Primary School has been honoured as one of the best feeder schools of the 2023 National Senior Certificate Examinations in Gauteng.

This means the department considered the background of the top matric learners of 2023 and discovered that many of them attended Nkabinde Primary School.

“We are very excited because this shows our work is paying off. We have done our part to groom them, and they did well in matric,” explained the principal, Vusi Nkabinde.

This school is the only township school to receive this honour in the Gauteng East District for 2023. He said credit is due to all the teachers because they play a big role in creating a good foundation.

“One of the main ways our teachers use to improve comprehension is to make the learners write notes. As they write, they retain some of the information.

“Whereas, if we give them worksheets all the time, they may skim through it and not read to understand,” explained Stephina Matsetela, the HOD of the senior phase.

The school also boasts a library where learners are encouraged to borrow books.

“When they have finished a book, we challenge them to explain to one of their friends what the book is about. But the trick is for them to explain it in a different language.

“This will show us whether they truly understood what they were reading,” added Nkabinde.

He said they encouraged healthy conversation among the learners.

The winning team: Sabelo Mkhize, HOD of the intermediate phase Morene Moganedi, deputy principal, Vusi Nkabinde, the school’s principal, Thandeka Makhamba, HOD of the foundation phase and Stephina Matsetela, HOD of the senior phase.

“Every term we put up lists of the top ten of each grade. All of them want to see their names on that page. And when they don’t make it, we tell them they can do better next term,” added Morene Moganedi, the school’s deputy principal.

The school leaders admit that not every child can excel in academics and that is why they nurture sporting talents as well.

“We inspire them to be great at whatever talent you have,” added Nkabinde.

The school’s sports department also won two awards from the GDE in 2023. The school also gives the learners opportunities to participate in assembly every Friday. The learners pick a topic and how they are going to present it to the rest of the school.

“We are the winning team and have no intention of slowing down,” concluded Nkabinde.
