Operation Shanela weeding out criminals in Kwa-Thema

By Thursday morning, 292 people that were sought for different crimes had been arrested

Kwa-Thema – Brigadier Lebohang Machakela led the multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela on February 28 and 29.
Machakela, who is the deputy district commissioner, said the operation is preceded by investigations by detectives to root out wanted individuals.
By Thursday morning, 292 people that were sought for different crimes had been arrested.
By 08:15, fourteen traffic fines had been issued at a road block on the corner of Thema Road and Habede Street.
One vehicle was seized because of suspicion that the engine had been tempered with.
During the roadblock the officials conducted random searches.
“Three people have been arrested for possession of drugs, namely nyaope and Mandrax.
“There is another group of officials focused on visiting liquor outlets.
“Two people have already been arrested for dealing in liquor without a liquor license.
“Later on we will be joined by health inspectors from the CoE.
“They will be checking if spaza shops are complying with the regulations.
“We have to make sure to remove the items that are killing our children,” explained Machakela.
The SAPS partnered with the EMPD, Crime Prevention Wardens, Department of Home Affairs and the City of Ekurhuleni.
“So far I am happy with the successes that we have made but I am hoping that we will get even more positive results,” added Machakela.
