Collect your title deed for the full benefits of property ownership

All beneficiaries of RDP houses must collect their title deeds at their nearest customer care centres.

The MMC for Human Settlements, Masele Madihlaba, urges all beneficiaries of RDP houses to collect their title deeds at their nearest customer care centre.

Over 22 300 unclaimed title deeds have piled up and await collection at customer care centres across the city.

Madihlaba said the cause of the pile-up is challenges in locating the rightful beneficiaries primarily because of unresolved deceased estates, untraceable beneficiaries, informal sales and/or the illegal sale of RDP houses and discrepancies between the current occupants and the proper owners.

“We are calling on all affected residents around the city to come forward and collect their title deeds. Getting a title deed is the ultimate step for security of tenure and confirmation that the house belongs to you,” he said.

Madihlaba conducted a door-to-door handover of 32 title deeds in Etwatwa on February 23 to reduce the number of title deeds remaining in the municipality’s possession. Etwatwa has over 800 unclaimed title deeds.

Members of the public who wish to visit customer care centres to collect their title deeds must take their green bar-coded IDs or identity cards.

Meanwhile, the city is calling on members of the public who cannot afford to pay for services to register on the city’s indigent database to ensure they get the following benefits:

• 50% rebate on assessment rates;
• Free refuse removal;
• 50kwh of free electricity per month;
• 6kl of water and sewer per month;
• Free indigent burial to registered and deemed indigents; and
• Special rates on emergency services such as ambulance and fire-fighting.
