Little Refilwe to be laid to rest

The Grade One learner died at school after consuming biscuits bought at a corner shop.

Tsakani- The funeral service for Refilwe Usman will be on Saturday from 09:00 to 11:00 at Thiesa Burger Pre-Primary on Sindane Street.

The six-year-old lost her life after she fell sick at school last Tuesday.

A typical day ended in a nightmare when her father, Lucky Mkhwanazi, walked his daughter to school and bought her biscuits from the corner shop.

Refilwe, a Grade One learner at Mandlethu Primary School, started vomiting uncontrollably during class.

Her father was called to the school just before 11:00 because she was growing weak. By the time he got there, Mkhwanazi said he could see the life draining out of his child.

She was barely moving. Paramedics arrived at the school, and they confirmed her dead in the classroom.

When community members heard about the circumstances around her death, they confronted the shop owner where the father had bought the biscuits.

The days that followed her death saw foreign-owned shops in the area looted and robbed.

Eventually, Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwan appealed to Tsakani residents to desist from all criminal acts.

Calm has since been restored to the area. The cortège will proceed to the Vlakfontein Cemetery at 11:00 after the funeral.
