Child’s death sparks unrest

Tsakani- The death of a six-year-old girl has sparked unrest, and the Ekurhuleni mayor calls for calm.
Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwan has appealed to Tsakani residents to desist from criminal acts and looting.
An angry group of residents took to the streets on Tuesday night after learning that Refilwe Usman, who died at Mandlethu Primary School earlier that day, ate biscuits allegedly bought at a foreign-owned tuck shop.
The Grade One learner fell ill while at school.
Her parents and emergency services were called to the school after she started vomiting.
Paramedics declared her dead in the classroom.

Initially, the angry mob looted and robbed the shop where the biscuits were bought.
By Wednesday, however, the looting had spread to other foreign-owned shops in the area.
The mayor said he understands why the community is angry and that their emotions are running high.
“Let us keep our cool and allow the law enforcement agencies to carry out an investigation that will allow us to get to the bottom of this tragic incident,” he said.
“As the city, we sympathise with the family and the community of Tsakani for the loss of such a young and innocent life.
“Therefore, we appeal to the police to speedily conclude the investigations so that if there is any foul play, those responsible can face the might of the law.”
