City scoops Rand Water awards
Ekurhuleni set the benchmark for other Gauteng municipalities on water management.
The city’s continuous outstanding performance took centre stage at Rand Water’s (RW) 120 Years Legacy Celebration and Awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton on Friday.
Ekurhuleni’s overall management of providing quality drinking water and its unwavering efforts of sufficient water supply to its customers continue to be a clear benchmark for other municipalities in Gauteng.
The city’s Water and Sanitation Department lifted two awards on Friday – the water wise and the bulk water distribution awards.
RW presents the water wise award to a customer showing evidence of long-term and regular water-saving education and awareness campaigns in communities, schools, and the public through various platforms.
The bulk water distribution award, on the other hand, is presented to municipalities or entities that show outstanding water operations and maintenance programmes.
These programmes include:
• Timeous reporting of leaks to the relevant district or Rand Water official;
• Satisfactory turnaround time for planned supply interruptions on municipal infrastructure;
• Consistent participation in monthly joint meter reading activities;
• Assisting RW with leak detections and formalising illegal connections;
• Consistent participation and engagement with the entity;
• Adequate and consistent communication of water supply interruptions within the municipal area of jurisdiction; and
• Compliance with all required water management strategies.
The awards from Africa’s largest bulk water utility come on the back of the city’s remarkable achievement in securing three consecutive clean audits from the Office of the Auditor General of South Africa.
This was followed by four awards for excellent governance, which the city received at the Inaugural Municipal Audit Awards by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) a few months ago.
“We are a city that is hard at work, and we always put our best foot forward when it comes to servicing the people of Ekurhuleni and business alike.
“Ekurhuleni is not among the top metros in the country for nothing but excellence in how we discharge our mandate to provide a better life for all,” said city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi when she received the awards from the Water Department.
“Well done to everyone who made this possible. This should motivate the rest of the staff to work even harder. Together, let us continue to transform the city.”
Meanwhile, the CoE thanks its residents for using water wisely by implementing the water-saving tips shared and always reporting water leaks for prompt interventions by the city.
