Man in jail for illegal immigration allegedly rapes another in police cell

The man will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

A 21-year-old man held at the Springs Police Station was allegedly raped by an inmate on Monday. The Mozambican was arrested in Springs on Monday morning on charges of being an illegal immigrant.

He alleged that upon arrival at the police holding cells, he found a Nigerian immigrant bathing. The inmate allegedly attacked him, threatened him to remain silent or be killed, forced himself on him and raped him.

Later, after they had supper, the inmate allegedly raped him again. Fearing this inmate might understand English, the Mozambican said he could not speak to police officers working during the day.

During the evening’s routine patrol, he heard a night duty police officer speak a language he understood and assumed the inmate would not understand him.

He told the officer about his ordeal and was taken for further questioning. Ekurhuleni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed a case of rape is under investigation.

She said the inmate is still in police custody, and the victim was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

“The suspect will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Thursday,” she said.

The Nigerian was detained at the Springs Police Station by Modderbee Correctional Services after his court appearance as an illegal immigrant was remanded to November 21. He will be appearing in court on Thursday for the rape case.
