Stormwater infrastructure is prepared for heavy rains

Foreign objects were found in the stormwater.

Kwatsaduza – The Ekurhuleni MMC for Transport Planning, Roads and Stormwater, Clr Andile Mngwevu, continued with the stormwater system cleaning campaign on Thursday at the corner of Vlakfontein and Black roads next to Duduza Rank.

This ongoing programme has taken place in various parts of the city to prepare for the upcoming rainy season, prevent flooding and ensure a free water flow.

The MMC was joined by the five Kwa-Thema ward councillors, the Kwa-Thema convenor of councillors, Ald Dorah Mlambo and the Kwa-Thema CCC customer relations manager, Andries Nkabinde.

The team helped with cleaning on the day.

Vehicle tyres, animal bones and skin, plastic bags and logs were among the objects removed from the blocked drains.

“When these drains are blocked, water seeps into the road, affecting its surface. That is why we have unending potholes and constantly damaged roads.

“It also makes the streams smell, which affects the people. We all need to play our role in preventing blockages of our stormwater drainage systems. It affects us all,” Mngwevu emphasised.

“We encourage our communities to desist from dumping foreign objects into our stormwater system because the result is unnecessary blockages, which ultimately leads to flooding,” said Mngwevu.

He blamed the illegal vendors at the rank for the foreign objects in the stormwater.

“We are engaging the EMPD to enforce the by-laws,” Mngwevu said.

He said vendors should be registered and pay bills so it could be easy for the city to place a bin next to where they trade.

He said they will work closely with the environmental and water departments to ensure the water streams and ditches are cleaned and maintained.
