Severe thunderstorm hampers water supply

The City of Ekurhuleni’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said the power failure resulted in the loss of 2 000m litres daily.

Kwa-Thema – Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant powerlines were affected by the thunderstorm at about midnight on Tuesday and subsequently tripped the plant.

The CoE’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said the attempts to restart the plant revealed faults along the overhead power lines supplying the auxiliary plant.

“The power failure resulted in the loss of 2 000m litres daily.

“Consequently, this load reduction has impacted all municipalities supplied from the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant,” he said.

The following areas are affected:

• Palmiet system
• Klipriviersberg
• Klipfontein
• Brakfontein
• Germiston
• Northridge
• Haartebeeshoek
• Mapleton
• Brakpan
• Vlakfontein
• Selcourt
• Wildebeestfontein
• Stompiesfontein
• Eikenhof
• Meredale
• Waterval.

Dlamini said the incident occurred when high consumption strained the system, exacerbating the situation.

Rand Water urged customers to use water-saving measures to reduce the high consumption.
