Woman dies from burn injuries

Kamogelo Moepye (27) was a teacher at William Hills Secondary School in Actonville.

Kwa-Thema – Kamogelo Moepye succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

This is after the room she was sleeping in at her boyfriend’s home caught fire, suspected to be from a heater. She sustained third-degree burns on August 19.

The 27-year-old was a teacher at William Hills Secondary School in Actonville.

Together with her boyfriend, they were rescued from the flames by the boyfriend’s uncle who was on his way home from patrolling the streets of Kwa-Thema.

The deceased’s mother, Jacqui Moepye, said she was woken up by Kamogelo’s boyfriend in the early hours of the morning to inform her about the incident.

“We immediately rushed to Kwa-Thema Main Clinic where the ambulance was transporting her. Lying on the ambulance stretcher she couldn’t speak or move.

“I could see that she was badly burned,” she explained.

She added that during the three weeks in hospital, Kamogelo’s body rejected treatment and she was on a ventilator.

“Unfortunately she lost the fight on Saturday around 10:00,” said Jacqui.

Looking back on the afternoon before the incident, Jacqui said her daughter visited her while waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up to go on a date.

“She was excited and looking forward to the night out. I was expecting her to call me after the date to inform me that she was home but she didn’t call,” she added.

Police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened. A candle-lighting ceremony was held in Kamogelo’s memory at her home in Interland on Wednesday.
