Kopano Disabled Movement had a fun walk on Saturday

Members of the Kopano Disabled Movement and community members spent their Saturday raising funds for the centre.

Kwa-Thema – The Kopano Disabled Movement hosted an 8km fundraising fun walk and car wash on Saturday at their centre.

They wore orange, according to the centre, representing them and the walk. Kopano board chairperson Mandla Mabuza said they are raising funds to buy wheelchairs and a new minibus.

“We only have one minibus, which collects our members to bring them to the centre. We now have more members who don’t fit in the minibus, hence we need an additional one,” he said.

Mabuza said the members go to the centre daily as they do beadwork and farming. They also sell the jewellery they manufacture.

Attendees took pictures at the car wash after the walk.

An ANC member who attended the programme, Zanele Mathebula, said it is important for the community to attend such programmes.

“We hardly think of the disabled as people able to come up with programmes such as the fun walk, but this shows that ability starts in the mind,” Mathebula said.

She said during the planning of this programme, community stakeholders suggested the 8km walk and the Kopano representatives felt it was too little as they wanted 10km.

“The disabled need love and support. They are important parts of the community,” she concluded.
