The 2023 Gauteng Boxing Championships crowns ‘Challenge’ from Total Success Boxing Club as champion

This was his first attempt at fighting in the championships.

Tsakani – This weekend, Total Success Boxing Club’s Mthokozisi ‘Challenge’ Xundu was crowned the provincial gold medalist at the Gauteng Boxing Championships.

He went up against Sedibeng’s Lesigo Mogoda in the juniors (age 16 with a weight of 63kg) finals.

The boxer said he was overwhelmed with joy after hearing his name called as the winner on points.

“This was my first attempt at fighting in the championships, and I came out a winner. I worked hard during training to achieve this dream of being crowned as the national champion.

“There is no opponent I am scared of in my division, but I cannot underrate any of them,” he added.

He represented Ekurhuleni, and the other four regions in Gauteng competed in the championships at the Danie Van Zyl Hall, Randburg.

The club coach, Lwazi Xundu, said they were now preparing for the national championships, where all nine provinces compete for the top position in December.

“From a young age, I identified that he had an unquenchable thirst for combat, punching anything in sight.

“I noticed warrior blood in him and decided to open a boxing club. I introduced him to the sport at age six,” Xundu explained.

He said as a coach at Total Success Boxing Club, he has a passion for boxing and grooming young township boys to become champions.

“I sacrifice my time for these future boxers to be ready mentally and physically fit so they can compete and perform well in all the competitions – regional, provincial and national levels.

“I wish to see more young people join the team,” he added.
