Dlabathi hosts delegates from China in remembrance of Chris Hani

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Africa and the People’s Republic of China.

Kwatsaduza – The Whip of Council in Ekurhuleni, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, will host a delegation from the People’s Republic of China, the Communist Party and the Chris Hani Institute at the Chris Hani Memorial Site in the Thomas Nkosi Cemetry in Boksburg on August 28.

This will be in remembrance of Chris Thembisile Hani, who was a leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of uMkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Africa and the People’s Republic of China, which came into effect on January 1, 1998.

Dlabathi said throughout the past 25 years, the two countries have deepened their wide-ranging bilateral relations, which have since elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, and underpinned by the new 10-Year Strategic Programmes of Cooperation (2020-2029).

The delegates are in the country on an exchange programme with the Communist Party to make a meaningful contribution to the people of South Africa in knowledge sharing and eradicating poverty and unemployment.

Executive president of the Shanghai Administration Institute (SAI) Professor Xu Jiangang said, “We believe this visit will further strengthen our ties and appreciate the opportunity at this monument to learn more about the legacy of the former Communist Party leader, Chris Hani.”

SAI is an organisation aimed at fostering civil servants, public administrators and policy researchers and to carry out social science studies and policy consultation. The institution has at least 510 registered teaching and administrative staff members.

The institute library has a collection of over 450,000 books. In the digital library, they have 49 databases running with over 1.1 million electronic books. The continuously updated and self-established databases include more than 170,000 pieces of information in total.

SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila praised the delegation for honouring the former chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe by paying a visit to his gravesite.

“This is one heritage site we are proud of and always reminds us the birth of South Africa’s democracy was not easy. It took Chris Hani and his comrades for us all to enjoy this freedom.

“We forever remain indebted to their unwavering and selflessness, giving it all to the liberation of South Africa and its people. As the municipality of Ekurhuleni, we will continue to preserve his memories,” said Dlabathi.

Hani, a resident of Dawn Park in Boksburg, was killed on April 10, 1993, and was the architect of the campaign to tackle the three key societal issues of health, hunger and housing, which became known as the Triple H campaign.
