Commuters feel unsafe at Duduza Taxi Rank

The Springs Taxi Association’s Lyric Tau encouraged aggrieved residents to lodge their complaints at the association.

Kwa-Thema – The Springs Taxi Association (STA) is committed to bringing order and safety to the Duduza Taxi Rank.

The association was responding to the concerns submitted by commuters and motorists who use the taxi rank and Vlakfontein Road daily.

In a letter to the African Reporter, resident Moxolisi Guntu said the Duduza Taxi Rank had become a nuisance because drug addicts masqueraded as taxi marshals.

“The taxi rank is crowded by the addicts, who make many commuters uncomfortable and unsafe when they impose themselves on commuters without being asked.

“We plead with the taxi association to address this and ensure their commuters feel safe when in the vicinity of the taxi rank,” he added.

Motorist Sonti Makhubela said she felt unsafe when driving near the rank because some drivers did not abide by the rules of the road.

“The 4+1 mini taxis and the taxis make it difficult for ordinary drivers to use the road, and they often skip the red light.

“It is a nightmare using the road when the traffic lights are malfunctioning or during load-shedding,” she added.

STA spokesperson Lyric Tau said they conducted regular workshops with the taxi drivers about how to treat their passengers and commuters.

“We encourage aggrieved residents to lodge their complaint at the STA. The necessary steps will be followed accordingly,” he said.

Tau said they monitored the situation at the intersection and worked towards finding lasting remedial solutions.
