Ext Two residents are exposed to sewage

Sewage has been troubling Ext 2 residents.

Kwa-Thema – After receiving several complaints about blocked sewage drains from Kwa-Thema Ext 2 residents, the Ekurhuleni mayor, Sivuyile Ngodwana, visited the area to inspect the situation on Wednesday morning.

Thokozane Shadrack Maseko, the HOD of Water and Sanitation, accompanied the mayor.

For over seven years, residents have been exposed to sewage in their homes that flow from a manhole in the area.

Since November, the situation has worsened as sewage floods their homes daily.

While in the area, the mayor noticed that when residents flushed their toilets, the waste came from outside their doors, with most being next to the kitchen door.

People now dump outside the landfill site.

Some residents wake up to their yards flooded by sewage and cannot open their windows for fresh air, as doing so will only allow toxic air to fill their houses.

The damage is in about 28 houses. The mayor told the residents they would find an immediate solution to the problem.

When the mayor left the area, he went to the Rietfontein Landfill Site, which has been closed since May by residents.

Since the site’s closure, the outside has become an illegal dumping site, which is a health hazard. Ngodwana instructed the area to be cleaned and promised to visit the site to check on the progress soon.
