Kwa-Thema pensioner feels unsafe after hijacked car found in her yard

The owner was kidnapped with the vehicle and later dumped on the N3 highway.

Kwa-Thema – Gogo Peggy Kgwele is living in fear after a hijacked white Toyota Hilux Special Utility Vehicle (SUV) was found in her yard last Wednesday.

The EMPD Tsakane Precinct received a tip-off from a vehicle tracking company regarding the location of a reported hijacked vehicle. A car matching the description of the hijacked vehicle was found.

It is alleged that the vehicle was hijacked on Tuesday in the Tsakane area. The victim’s cellphone was also stolen by the hijackers.

The owner was kidnapped with the vehicle and later dumped on the N3 highway. EMP spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa confirmed that the owner of the car opened a case docket at the Zonkezizwe Police Station.

The investigation continues. The pensioner lives with her family in the house with two nephews who occupy the outside rooms.

Peggy said she was shocked to hear the police knocking on her door demanding answers about the stolen car in her yard.

“The car had been abandoned in her yard for days and when she inquired about its owner her nephew told her to mind her own business.

“Though it was not the first time that unknown cars get parked in my yard, this one I was not comfortable with.

“My nephews sometimes tell me that the different cars I wake up to in my yard are here to be washed but this doesn’t make sense to me. I know nothing about a car wash operating in my yard,” she said.

Since the incident, the pensioner now locks herself inside her house for safety.

“I don’t know who was involved during the hijacking and why my home was used to conceal stolen goods. All I want is to feel safe in my yard,” she added.

Thepa said the pensioner’s grandchildren were nowhere to be found during the search and recovery of the car.
