KwaThema police officer arrested for culpable homicide

The officer handed himself over to the Tsakani Police Station three hours after the incident indicating that he was involved in an attempted hijacking.

Kwa-Thema – The families of Thabiso Tshoane and Nonkuleko Maseko, who were killed in a hit-and-run on Saturday, are demanding justice.

The couple was hit by a car allegedly driven by a police officer attached to the Kwa-Thema Police Station while walking home from a night out.

They were both certified dead at the scene by paramedics.

The officer handed himself over to the Tsakani Police Station three hours after the incident indicating he was involved in an attempted hijacking.

He was linked later to the case through a vehicle registration plate left at the scene.

Lerato Tshoane said Thabiso’s friend, who survived the incident, woke up the family.

“He told the family Thabiso and his girlfriend were knocked over by a car, which immediately drove off from the scene. When we arrived at the scene, we found Nonkululeko already dead and Thabiso had a faint pulse,” she added.

The two families are demanding justice for the couple.

“Why didn’t he stop, call an ambulance or take them to the hospital, which is not far from the scene?

“He is an officer; he took an oath to protect this community, but his actions say otherwise. For that he needs to pay for his actions,” he added.

Robbie Raburabu of IPID confirmed they are investigating a case of drunk driving and culpable homicide.

“The case was not enrolled in court due to an outstanding investigation still underway. The case was handed over to the IPID for investigations,” he said.
