Funukukhanya staff give back to the community

“We saw that a soup kitchen would be a great initiative so that everyone can keep warm during this cold winter,”

Tsakani – Funukukhanya Primary School staff celebrated Mandela Day with the less fortunate by providing warm soup at the Tsakane Ext 5 park on Tuesday.

A staff member at the school, Queen Santi, said they decided to use the day to share the little they have with the community.

“We saw that a soup kitchen would be a great initiative so that everyone can keep warm during this cold winter.

“We chose to set up the kitchen in this park because we noticed that most people hang around here and it’s also where the homeless are usually found,” said Queen.

She thanked the principal and the school management for giving them the go-ahead and support.

The principal of the school, Mashudu Maseko, said that giving is not only about making a donation but making a difference in someone’s life.

“This initiative was not only meant to feed the needy but to also promote the culture of helping others in need and giving back to the community.

“We would like to thank the librarian, SGB, and the reading champions of Funukukhanya for coming up with such a great initiative,” said the principal.

She added that it was good seeing people come together to celebrate Mandela Day and this showed that the spirit of Ubuntu exists.

One of the people who was at the soup kitchen said they are thankful to the Funukukhanya staff for reaching out.

“We appreciate everything they did for us, especially in this weather, I hope they would do it more often and not wait for Mandela Day,” said the woman.

Kamogelo Shabangu also said he was happy and satisfied with the soup and bread.
