ANC Ekurhuleni divided over a coalition government with EFF

ANC Ekurhuleni acting regional chairperson in hot water with regional leadership after he wrote a letter to provincial leadership.

Kwatsaduza – The cracks in the ANC Ekurhuleni regional executive committee (REC) are starting to show, ahead of the upcoming regional general council (RGC).

This comes after the acting regional chairperson, Jongizizwe Dlabathi wrote to Luthuli House, requesting the party leaders to review their coalition with the EFF in the metro. The ANC and EFF got under the same blanket in March, toppling the DA-led coalition government.

The regional chairperson position became vacant after they elected the regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina into the NEC during last year’s national conference.

In the letter, Dlabathi noted he is not calling for outright opposition to the coalition but calling for a coalition arrangement that is not detrimental to the ANC.

“I am calling for an assessment of the current arrangement, believing that if we do not reconsider, the status quo will harm the standing of the ANC and the ability to take it forward.

“It seems we chose to drink a highly concentrated dosage of acid thinking it will not harm us, while it will slowly. Fortunately, we have not swallowed everything and can still prevent it from causing further damage.

“It will be cowardly of me to mute and embrace an arrangement that I consider a process that will systematically liquidate the ANC from power.

“In its current form, the ANC-EFF arrangement in Ekurhuleni has no strategic value,” he said.

Responding to the letter Moipone Mhlongo ANC Ekurhuleni acting regional secretary, said they were shocked to have only learnt through social media about the letter.

“We condemn any attempts to undermine the principles of collective leadership and democratic centralism within our organisation.

“The REC is dismayed by these unfortunate utterances; we are deeply concerned about the behaviour of certain members who act outside the collective wisdom of organisational structures.

He said the party’s grip on the metro started in 2016 when it attained 49% electoral support. They then went into a coalition government with AIC, with Mzwandile Masina appointed as mayor.
