Fun and games for bambinos

Kwa-Thema – Isinyathelo Esihle Ward 80 Backyard Crèches, an organisation comprising seven crèches from the ward and three from other wards, had a mini-marathon and kiddies Olympic games on June 15.

The aim was to celebrate Youth Month and for the children to enjoy themselves while socialising and having fun with the children from other daycare centres.

The day began with the children meeting on the corner of Ncwandi Street and Thema Road, where they started the mini-marathon headed for Ziba Park.

The children sang their daycare rhymes and church songs while en route.

The children prayed before they started their Olympic games.

The games were fun for the children, and they competed in groups representing their daycare centres. They competed in an egg and spoon race where there was much cheating by the teachers.

They helped the children and those not holding the spoons as per the rules. Some ran over the boundary, while others did not reach it.

They then competed in the bean bag and sack races, played soccer and twisted the hula hoops. There was no scoring because the day was for the kids to have fun.

The children were treated to face painting.

Agnes Seleke from the organisation said, “With our backgrounds, we don’t have enough space for our children to play.

“Therefore, we are using this day for them to play because it is part of development and child growth.”

She said the day was also about different daycares working together, regardless of them not being one.

Isinyathelo Esihle also serves as a forum for the daycare centres that helps them to make their daycares the best.
