Local athlete sparks at champs

Kwa-Thema – Kwa-Thema athlete Moeketsi ‘Sparks’ Moagi participated in the South African Masters’ Athletics Championships (SAMA champs) recently in Cape Town.

Moagi placed third, winning a bronze medal in the men’s 50+ 1 000m race, which he completed in 5:04,65. He also participated in the men’s 50+ 3 000m steeplechase where he placed second, winning a silver medal.

“I am proud of myself as I competed in these races with an ankle injury. I pushed myself although it was hard,” he said.

Moagi will be part of the South African squad in the Africa Masters Athletics Championships to take place in November in Cape Town.

He said he will be using the Gauteng Athletics cross-country championships to train for the November championships.

“I missed the first two cross-country competitions and will be joining from the third one,” Moagi said.

The third cross-country will take place on Saturday in Dobsonville. It will be followed by others in Delta Park, Daveyton, Westonaria and the final one in Kagiso in August.

Moagi said, “I am hoping to win so I may get the opportunity and chance to participate in the South African Cross-Country competition to take place in Gqeberha in November.”

He said he is also grateful to the community as they helped him to get to Cape Town for the SAMA champs.

Moagi is also focusing on developing youngsters in athletics and has a group he trains at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex Mondays to Thursdays from 16:00 to 17:00.
