Duduza IKOK dominates the mat in Vosloorus
Bheki Radebe wants to grow karate in Duduza.
Duduza – Karatekas from the International Karatedo Organisation Kyokushinkaikan (IKOK) Sonoda Full Contact Karate Organisation competed in the annual karate contest at the Vosloorus Civic Centre on Saturday.
The IKOK is a sports extramural activity programme by the Duduza Library, where Bheki Julius Radebe has trained the karatekas since 2013.
Radebe said the tournament was intense, but the karatekas were exceptional and showed technical and aggressive skills on the fighting mat.
He also said karate is growing in Duduza, and it’s all thanks to the library for giving a platform to the young karatekas to have a meaningful extramural activity to engage in after school hours.
“Scholars say sport is the best activity a child can embark on to relax the brain after long hours of sitting at a desk at school.
“Hence, I come to the library daily to assist these children in shaping themselves to do something meaningful with their time,” Radebe said.
Radebe believes karate is one of the best sports for children because it effectively contributes to shaping their behaviour and attitudes.
He said a child’s confidence was boosted when they knew they could protect and defend themselves.
“I am proud of my students for all their hard work in training that enabled them to dominate the competition again this year.

“We now look forward to embarking on another national contest at the Orlando Communal Hall in Soweto in July,” Radebe said.
