A film shot in Kwa-Thema shines a light on social ills

The film explores the impact of peer pressure, classism and how they lead to various social ills, such as crime and poverty.

Kwa-Thema – International award-winning producer Kagiso Modupe is set on empowering young people through his latest film, Ingoma, The Song.

The film was shot in White City, Highland, Masimini and Rest in Peace. It explores the impact of peer pressure, classism and how they lead to various social ills such as crime and poverty.

This film is the multi-talented producer’s third release through his production company, Bakwena Productions.

Award-nominated actor Mpho Sebeng has the leading role of Themba, who finds himself at a crossroads when peer pressure leads him to believe crime is his only way to survive poverty.

When the law finally catches up with him, Themba must make a decision that changes his life forever. The film provides viewers with an intricate look at some disadvantaged families.

Modupe said the producers were passionate about telling impactful stories that speak to the youth.

“My favourite thing about this film is that it does not glorify crime as a solution to poverty but instead shows it for what it is – a result of severe economic inequality, one of the many problems SA faces today.

“The film looks at many themes, such as despite choices being influenced by difficult circumstances, there will always be consequences for said choices,” he said.

He added that the film also emphasises that it is never too late to make better choices and take a different path.

Ingoma will be on Netflix from June 17.
