Kwa-Thema choir singer rebrands into a hip-hop artist

Hip Hop artist sets his sights on becoming an industry A-lister.

Kwa-Thema – Phenyo Louw, aka King SA, grew up singing in his family choir and then joined his primary school choir.

In high school, he would participate in rap battles and also frequented music studios after school.

The 32-year-old said even though he was singing gospel in the choir, he would listen to artists like Zola and Skwatta Kamp and fell in-love with hip-hop music.

“I used to listen to their music because it was interesting and it inspired me to ultimately become an artist.

“In 2012 I met my producer Asteristar Beats and he started producing beats for me,” said the artist.

He continued to say his first official single, titled Free Your Mind, was released in 2019. The song is about inspiring people to believe in themselves and their dreams.

In 2021 he released his first EP, titled First Footprint. The following year it was nominated at the City Awards for best newcomer.

He also got nominated and won best hip-hop artist at Mzansi Art and Music Awards in the same year.

Phenyo said, “I am elated with everything I have achieved thus far musically and I am planning to be one of the best artists to ever do it in South Africa.”

After the EP he released three singles and is currently working on the fourth one with Cassandra Schoeman to be released soon.
