Seniors invited to get active

Established in 2020, Empilisweni for Gogo and Mkhulu officially opened its doors to pensioners on May 22.

Established in 2020, Empilisweni for Gogo and Mkhulu officially opened its doors to pensioners on May 22.
The gym aims to encourage people over 60 to prioritise their physical fitness.

“We want them to have a healthy lifestyle through exercise, eating healthy food and being stress-free. A healthy mentality also helps to avoid loneliness.

“We also want to bring some joy through singing, dancing, laughter and excursions.

“Some pensioners are mistreated by their family members. This will be time spent away from those stressful situations,” explained Macdonald Nyoka, the club’s chairperson.

The executive committee members of Empilisweni are Edward Radebe, George Skhakha, Martha Malefetsane, Pinky Mtsweni, Philipine Mcebi, Willy Lukhele and Macdonald Nyoka.

According to Nyoka, the club already has 58 registered members.

“We invite those who have not yet joined to come onboard,” he said.

Nyoka explained that the gym was registered as an NPO, and because of this, he appealed to the community for donations of money and equipment.

“In this way, we can ensure registration for our members is free. Whatever sponsorship we get benefits all of us,” he added.

The facility is in the Imithombo Management building on Prince George Avenue (facing Wright Park).

The club is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 09:00 and 12:00.

They hope to attract pensioners from Wright Par, Reedville, Kwa-Thema, Pollak Park and Brakpan.
