Tsakani Athletics Club host second leg of cross-country run

Athletes and seasoned runners came in numbers to participate in the cross-country as others were preparing for this year’s Comrades Marathon.

Tsakani – After a decade of not hosting cross-country athletics, Tsakani Athletics Club hosted the Gauteng Central Athletics second league meeting at the Faranani Multi-purpose Centre on Saturday.

Hundreds of athletes and seasoned runners from different running clubs in Ekurhuleni competed in the 1km up to 10km run.

Mbuyiselo Nkuna, a member of Tsakani Athletics Club, said even though they organised the event at the 11th hour it turned out to be a success.

“We were given six weeks to prepare after another club withdrew from hosting the event. We are satisfied with how everything turned out,” he said.

He said that as a club they are now planning to make it an annual event. Pule Tjaoana from Waterfall, who has been running for two decades, ran 8km on Saturday and finished in a time of 27:59.

“I trained hard and hoped to win but I did not expect that my teammate would finish second. On June 3, I will be running 21km in Gqeberha. I have already qualified to represent Central Gauteng and I also want to win it,” he said.

He said that in the next five years, he wants to coach the developing team. People came in numbers to support and cheer for the runners.
