Disability dialogue during disability awareness month

Living Able is attempting to get everyone to live able.

Kwa-Thema – Living Able Foundation held a community dialogue at the church of Jesus Christ of Latter days in Kwa-Thema on Tuesday.

The dialogue was about raising awareness about disability and speaking about the challenges faced within the disability sector.

The dialogue was facilitated by Sandile Tsie, founder and chief catalyst of Ntethe Consulting Services.

Founder of the Living Able Foundation, Katlego Mkhonza said, “The dialogue was a success as we are celebrating Disability Awareness Month. As it planted a seed, we need to continue to educate our society about disability.

“All stakeholders today agreed that everyone has a disability whether visible or invisible.”

The challenges raised by the stakeholders included:
• A negative attitude from society towards persons with disability.

“They are treated as children and less human. Unemployment inclusion is still largely lacking and buildings are still not accessible,” said Mkhonza.

• Persons with disabilities should not be limited and not be told to always remain in the house.

Mkhonza said being behind closed doors as a disabled person is frustrating as we are all the same.
