Kwa-Thema Disability Club senior team crowned champion

Local disability club crowned Gauteng league winner.

Kwa-Thema – Kwa-Thema Disability Club senior soccer club was crowned as champion at the finals in the Gauteng Sports Association for the Physically Disabled.

The team locked horns with Adelaide School Tambo and played to a 5-0 win. In the junior league, Phillip Kushlick Junior School was crowned champion while Junior Frances Vorwerg School was runner-up.

The league finals were played during Disability Awareness Day, in collaboration with Ekurhuleni Sports and Gauteng Sports Academy at Kwa-Thema Stadium.

During the event, teams displayed activities in different sporting codes like wheelchair tennis and javelin while residents took part in aerobics.

Kwa-Thema Disability Club coach, Aubrey Mathibela said he is proud of his team for winning the league.

“Our goal from the start of the league was to be crowned winner. We all worked hard as a team to ensure that we achieve this goal.

“Our new goal is to compete nationally to show the country what we are made of,” he added.

He added that he appreciates the support of the parents, sports structures and community for supporting the club and players.

“Over the years we have been able to achieve our goals with the continued help from the community,” he explained.

Soccer coach, Mkhonza Mkhonzana said he is proud of the team for winning the league.

“During the game, the team showed their hunger for a win and were better prepared,” he added.

The squad to represent Gauteng during the Toyota National Championships for the Physically Disabled, which will be hosted in Cape Town, will be announced on the day.
