Police warn against sitting in cars at night

Duduza police caution against parking and seating in your car at night.

Duduza – Police are warning residents against the popular trend of parking and sitting on the side of the road.
This is after a 43-year-old man was hijacked in his charcoal Volkswagen polo on Friday night.
The complainant was sitting in the car with a friend, at about 23:00, along Thipe Street, when a white Polo sedan drove past them.
A few minutes later three unknown men walked to the driver’s side of the vehicle and knocked on his window.
The victim opened his window thinking it was the police.
One of the suspects then pulled out a firearm and told them to cooperate. They then ordered them to move into the backseat of their car.
They drove off into the open field between John Dube and Memeza, where they tied their arms and feet with ropes and went on to assault them.

Tsakani police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka added that the suspects took the victims’ bank cards and cellphones.
“They were rescued by a passer-by and managed to seek help,” he added.
In another incident, a couple was shot and killed while sitting in a minibus taxi on Sunday night.
Manaka explained that this is despite the number of interventions by the police cautioning residents not to sit in their cars at night.
“This makes it easy for criminals to hijack.
“Only two weeks ago a police officer was assaulted when he warned a couple about sitting in their car at night, outside Lucky’s Tavern along Nkomo Street,” he explained.
Police are calling on law-abiding citizens to stay safe and take extra precautions to avoid getting hijacked.
