ANC Women’s League in Kwa-Thema celebrates the legacy of Margaret Gazo

The event was attended by the Gauteng MEC for Finance Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

Kwa-Thema – The Selope Thema Zone ANC Women’s League held a commemoration ceremony for the late Margaret Gazo on August 18 at Kwa-Thema Community Hall.
Present on the day was the Gauteng MEC for Finance Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko who praised Gazo for her bravery and commitment to the fight against apartheid.
Born on January 1, 1918, and died on April 8, 1974, Gazo is a stalwart of the ANC Women’s League who was one of the organisers of the 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings against the pass system.
She spent five years in prison for being a political activist during apartheid.
In 2011, the South African Government conferred The Order of Luthuli in Bronze to Gazo for leading the Women’s March and for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the ideals of democracy and her contribution to human rights and the struggle against apartheid.

“She believed that everyone can do good, see the bigger picture and make a meaningful contribution to society.
“These are the things that she wanted from us.
“In her memory, we must enforce change and repair our public intuitions.
“We must forge a social compact that recognises the challenges we are faced with,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.
ANC veteran Auntie Nyathela said her teachings and courage remain relevant.
She said through the event they wanted to remember the women who fought for freedom and encourage the ones present to take up initiatives.
She added that with the country faced with high unemployment rates, poverty, gender-based violence and substance abuse, her organisation needs to come up with programmes that will bring solutions.
