New book from Kwa-Thema author aims to address GBV

The book aims to encourage men to join the fight against GBV.

Kwatsaduza – Author Hosia Malekane’s new book aims at the scourge of GBV in the country.

The 67-year-old entrepreneur hopes his new offering, The Imperatives of Revoking our Silence, will inspire men to speak out and take action against the killing of women and children, and for those men who are also being abused to reach out for help.

The book was launched in November at the University of Johannesburg.

“I came across a report by the SAPS in 2018, stating that 2 930 women in our country were murdered that year. I was shocked and terrified. Research showed the trend has existed for over five years.

“That’s when I felt I had to do something and this book is my contribution towards the eradication of gender-based prejudice and violence,” explained Malekane.

He is urging men to add their voices to the fight against GBV.

According to Malekane, upon writing the book he did a lot of research on the #MeToo movement. He also interviewed the director of GBV at the Department of Basic Education.

“There is a great silence from our male counterparts about what is happening to women in general. I’m calling on my brothers to come out, shout, be heard and be seen in protests because the protests are always conducted by women who are the victims.

“Men must revoke their silence, they must not remain quiet any longer,” he said.

Malekane said the book is highly informative and for everyone, especially young people.

“The book speaks to the youth but, at the same time, it also addresses parents in that we need to start educating our young men about respecting women as our equals.

“It is evident by some customs and traditional teachings we got from our parents, things like a man mustn’t cry like a girl, what is that?”

“It is incumbent upon each reader to realise that all of us have to come to the party and help each other,” he said.

The book is available at book shops countrywide. He is also planning to launch the book in Kwatsaduza, on August 9, at the Kwa-Thema Community Hall, from 12:00.
