Residents of Langaville come together to clean up their environment

The campaign which started on Youth Day continued until Monday.

Langaville – A group of residents in Extension Eight have taken it upon themselves to clean the area.
Various sections that were bombarded by illegal dumping have been cleared up.
The initiative was the idea of Thomas Masha (64), who recruited other residents to join him in the campaign.
They started with the cleaning campaign on June 16 and continued until Monday.
“I saw a child picking up pills that were dumped in one of the illegal dumping sites, that’s when I realised the dangers we are placing ourselves in.
“Extension Eight is filled with waste as people are dumping all over due to a lack of bins. As a result the entire community is being put at risk,” he said.

He has urged the community to work together to fight illegal dumping.
“Keeping our environment clean is important and beneficial to all. That’s why we must work together in the plight against illegal dumping and ensure that we educate each other about environmental affairs,” he added.
Another resident who was part of the clean-up, Doris Qanda, said she is thrilled with the progress they have made.
“Our community looks so much better compared to when we started which is incredible. Previously there was dirt all over causing health hazards because waste is not only bad for the environment but our health too.
“With long-term effects, my wish is that we can continue to keep our area clean and neat,” said Qanda.
