Soccer tournament raises awareness about GBV

Local teams fought to be crowned as winners of the fourth annual Easter-Galler Games.

Tsakani – Sixteen local soccer teams participated in the fourth annual Easter-Galler Games at Malendela Sports Ground over the weekend.

The semi-finals and finals were played at Tsakani Stadium.
The tournament was supposed to be played during the Easter holidays but had to be postponed due to bad weather.
Sixteen seniors teams, four masters, four u-11, four u-13 and a u-15 teams participated in the tournament.
Teams from Wattville, Thokoza, Voslorus and Spruit took part.
Simunye FC walked away with R20 000, a soccer kit, and 25 gold medals while the runners-up, Jealous Down, received R5 000, a soccer kit and 25 silver medals.

Masters Ext Masters played to a 3-1 win against World Eleven FC.
In the u-11 and u-13 divisions Yebo Yes FC were the champions.
Tjovitjo FC was crowned u-15 champions.
Organiser Thuso Mtsweni explained that they hosted the tournament to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), child abuse and substance and drug abuse.
“We are a development-focused youth programme aiming to allow youth to play soccer regardless of their skill level.
“Through this programme, the youth will be taught to improve their soccer skills while learning the important values of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play,” he explained.
Mtshweni added that their main goal is not only to advance the youth’s athletic skills but to grow their overall development by building lifelong skills.
