Metro warns of house allocation scam

Residents warned about online housing scam.

The City of Ekurhuleni is warning the public to be alert, following a scam soliciting money from home-seekers by fraudsters claiming to place them high on the housing waiting list.
In the latest scam, these fraudsters have even gone to the extent of opening a Facebook page, using a photo of the HoD for Human Settlements in Ekurhuleni, Andile Mahlalutye.
The HoD has since distanced himself from this page and warned unsuspecting victims of this scam.

The City reiterates that RDP houses and serviced stands are not for sale.
Allocation of low-cost housing and serviced stands is done through a community consultative process, wherein the City and councillors contact the rightful beneficiaries to provide regular updates on the status of their housing allocation.
The public is encouraged to report any act, or suspected act, of housing fraud to SAPS, the Hawks, the Public Protector or the National Anti-Corruption Hotline on 0800 701 701.
