Patient assaulted at Far East Rand Hospital

Mpho Ngwane was allegedly assaulted by guards at Far East Hospital.

Kwatsaduza – Far East Rand Hospital patient Mpho Ngwane was allegedly assaulted by the hospital’s security guards for laying on the floor.
The 32-year-old from Payneville, in Springs, was rushed to the hospital on Saturday night.
While he was waiting to be admitted, with excruciating pain from an ulcer, he decided to lay on the hospital’s floor to ease the pain.

Mpho Ngwane sustained injuries during the assault.

When two security guards saw him on the floor they demanded that he sits in his chair.
Mpho said one of the guards told him that he cannot be laying on the floor as if I was at his home.
“They forcefully tried to carry me back to the chair. I tried explaining that I was in pain but they didn’t want to hear any reason.
“Before I knew it, they started assaulting me and wheeled me into an empty room where they repeatedly kicked me as I was laying defenceless,” he explained.
He added that he was rescued by his mother who heard him screaming for help in the hospital’s corridors.
Mpho’s mother added that the guards alleged that her son was disrespecting them.

“I could not understand how he was disrespecting them because I left him very weak and I do not know if he would have the energy to start a fight.
“I want the guards to be punished for their actions,” she added.
Far East Rand Hospital spokesperson, Phumza Ntuthuka, says the matter is being investigated by the hospital quality assurance office and the security company.
“If these allegations are found to be true, the proper steps will be taken.
“In the interim, all security officers that were allocated and implicated in that area of the hospital have been moved, pending the outcome of the investigation,” she added.
