Another load reduction protest in Duduza

Disgruntled residents took to the streets, blocking them with large stones and burning tyres, blocking movement in the area.

Duduza – Scores of residents took to the streets again on Monday morning in response to the continuous electricity load reductions implemented in the area.
This was a repeat of the protest that saw the township burning two weeks ago in demand for Eskom to restore electricity to the area.
Disgruntled residents took to the streets, blocking them with large stones and burning tyres, blocking movement in the area.
Residents had given Eskom seven days to respond to their memorandum and discontinue the load reduction programme in the area.

Ward 87 councillor Bongani Hlope explained they met with officials from Eskom to find a resolution to the electricity woes.
“Unfortunately, we were told load reduction is a national programme aimed at recovering funds lost because of non-payments and illegal connections.
“They also explained they are trying to protect their infrastructure,” he explained.
Hlope added they asked the officials to address residents in Duduza, but they couldn’t because of the Kwa-Thema protest last Monday.
Resident Martha Kgosago said they will not stop protesting until Eskom takes their grievances seriously.
“We have children who are in school, especially in matric, and are supposed to be studying at night with lights.
“Why must those who pay for their electricity consumption be punished by non-payers?” she asked.

Duduza residents are demanding for load reductions to be scrapped in their area.
