Local runners fight to qualify for big races

This is to qualify for the Two Oceans Marathon to be held in April and the Comrades Marathon in August.

Kwatsaduza – On Saturday, 10 runners from Kwa-Thema Striders competed in three races in one day – the Kosmos Marathon held in Secunda, Mpumalanga.
They started with the 42.2km race at 06:00, followed by the 21.1km at 13:00 and finished with the 10km race at 17:00.
On Sunday, 15 runners showed off their fitness in the 42km and 21km races in the Johnson Crane Marathon in Benoni.
They are also preparing for the annual Soweto Marathon.
This is to qualify for the Two Oceans Marathon to be held in April and the Comrades Marathon in August.

Many members were not training because of Covid-19 regulations, but are slowly picking up the pace.
Club chairperson Maruping Kodisang said they are having club runs if they don’t have races.
“We hope a large number qualifies to compete in the two big races to represent Kwa-Thema.
“We are also raising funds for the runners who are disadvantaged and cannot afford to participate in the races because of funds.
“The Comrades Marathon has doubled to R1 200 this year, and many of our runners cannot afford to register.
“We are calling on interested sponsors to assist with funds to ensure the talented runners can compete,” he explained.
