Access to learning needed for children with disabilities

Having their own facility will help many children and families in Duduza.

Duduza – Founders of the Umthombo Stimulation and Day-care Centre believe children with special needs deserve to have access to quality education.
The NPO is calling on local leaders and business forums to assist it with a venue to commence with its goals, which are to provide stimulation and educative classes to children with disabilities.
The NPO was established in 2015 by four founders who also have different disabilities – Vusi Tshabalala, Phindile Nhlengethwa, Matshidiso Mthethwa and Mokete Mokhotla.

“For the longest time, people with disabilities have been side-lined, and the struggle is real.
“We struggle with school placements, care centres, which cater to our needs and having access to employment.
“A lot of disabled children are forced to stay indoors because there’s no place for them to go, which is why we have established this NPO,” said Mthethwa.
Co-founder Nhlengethwa said having their own facility will help many children and families in Duduza.
“Our biggest challenge is finding a proper venue, as there are a couple of things we need to consider, since we want to cater to children with disabilities.

“We have already created a database as we go door to door and have found lots of children who do not go to school or have access to a daycare that caters for their needs.
“Duduza has vacant places, where a centre can be build for these children,” she said.
They stated their goal is to have the centre up and running with highly skilled and trained teachers to provide education and life skills to those who most deserve it.
