Councillor pays off school uniform debts

The councillor decided to roll out a campaign to help parents pay off their lay-bys.

Duduza – Ward Eighty Six councillor Nsizwa Mekgwe has taken it upon himself to help poor parents pay off their back-to-school lay-bys.
To date, he has paid off school uniforms worth R26 649 and is still working with stores to provide him with the information of those in need.
“I have been bombarded with requests from desperate parents to help pay off the lay-bys for their school children.
“I don’t want to see children staying behind while their peers are back in school,” he explained.

The councillor decided to roll out a campaign to help parents pay off their lay-bys.
To date, he has paid off 35 and still has more to pay off.
“We don’t have a fixed budget but are working on seeing all the lay-bys paid off.
“Some delays we are encountering result from some of the lay-bys including other clothing items that are not school-related.
“We are working with the stores to round up the numbers so we can pay them off,” he explained.
Mekgwe added that he understands that many parents lost their jobs because of Covid-19 and are still trying to rebuild their lives but this should not affect their children’s education.
“We want to see all children back in school and focusing on their studies,” he added.
