Kwa-Thema disabled team makes it to Soncini semi-finals

Siphesihle Mabena placed fourth in the 200m run, while Refilwe Sishange placed eighth in the javelin event.

Kwa-Thema – Two athletes from the Kwa-Thema Disability Club were knocked out in the semi-finals in the annual OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games over the weekend at Germiston Stadium.
The games aim to celebrate the legacy of fallen struggle hero OR Tambo. Participants compete in athletics, netball, basketball, football and swimming, with the focus on the age group for athletics being u-16.
Siphesihle Mabena placed fourth in the 200m run, while Refilwe Sishange placed eighth in the javelin event.

The team was part of the group that was selected to represent the City of Ekurhuleni at the provincial competition.
Team coach Aubrey Mathibela said he is proud of his athletes, as this was their first time competing in any sports competition.
“They were nervous and anxious about the attention at the competition but now that they are familiar with the environment, I hope they will do better in the Gauteng Sports for the Physically Challenged trials.
“We are hoping they come back with gold medals,” he said.
