Theatre cast brings albinism awareness to Tsakani school

“We have been touring schools across the country with the goal to engage and have an open discussion surrounding albinism with young people.”

Tsakani – Cast members of the theatre play, Mama, I Want the Black that You Are, visited a local school as part of their school tour across the country.
Learners with special educational needs at Matshediso School were educated on albinism through an awareness campaign by Molepo Theatre Projects, in collaboration with Nkgo Ya Metsi.
The play, which is written and directed by Arthur Molepo and produced by Mpho Molepo, aims to shine a spotlight on the hardships people with albinism face.

Mpho said the play is inspired by real-life events Arthur witnessed in the ’90s.
“He has had the idea from when he witnessed a young girl with albinism being side-lined by other children because of the colour of her skin.
“Since then he has been determined to educate people about albinism, especially young people.
“Every year we try to do activation in September since it is also albinism and disability awareness month,” he explained.
He is urging people to treat each other equally, with kindness and respect and said people with albinism have been marginalised for so long.
Joining him for the campaign was cast member and actor Alister Dube, who stressed that we are all human beings before anything else.
