The award ceremony was established in 2018 to celebrate and empower women in sport by the founder of the NPO Futballing Girls, Moonira Ramathula.

Last year, the initiative was launched with four other districts in Gauteng. According to the founder, they are working to establish the movement across the country.
“Ekurhuleni is always special for us because this is where it all began four years ago,” said Ramathula.
“As much as the pandemic has affected participation in sport, we still felt that we needed to continue with our awards as recognition should not stop.
“What is different and special about our awards is that we have Olympians, community builders and grassroots athletes in one room.
“Lastly, I would like to congratulate all the nominees and finalists for all their hard work in keeping girls and women in the sports brand alive in communities,” she said.
